Old Hammock Road

This track through the Bayard Wildlife Management area near Green Cove Springs, Florida, has a long history. During the plantation era of the late 18th century to the late 19th century, the road led to a fishing camp on the shore of the St. Johns river where local fishermen harvested fish and crabs for the local plantations and to sell in the cities of St. Augustine and Jacksonville. After the Civil War the area became a small community of former slaves who farmed the area and maintained the fish camp business. With the coming of the automobile this area became a popular picnic and camping destination, as it is today, but now people need to hike in the two miles from the parking lot. This photograph was mad in the Fall of 2021.
